Possible faculty advisors:
Sioban Harlow (previous director of II) or the current director of II

We should increase our budget.

We should have a co-director from Ecuador!

FOCUS OF THE FILM:

Flowers:
• If “Love, Women and Flowers” covers the same stuff that we want to cover, then we should pick a different topic.
• Dana reports that there is a flower place about 40 minutes from Quito.

Other ideas:
• Other topics that have been mentioned: banana plantations, Chevron/Texaco left open oil wells 30 years ago (toxic sites), etc.
• Follow cinamagraphically the spread of a parasite/disease through a city. Scientific documentary. Not so much head-and-shoulders interviews.
• Contrast malnutrition, disease, and poor in south of Quito vs. beautiful, overweight north part of Quito (that culture is permeating poor communities – Twinky culture). Paradox of malnutrition meets junk food habits.
• High infant mortality rates.
• Visual montages of people’s stories – focus in Quito
• Follow three families and their stories – health in the context of life
• Pick one ailment and compare different experiences with that illness
• Oral history – individual stories and experiences about the health system, conditions, beliefs, etc. (Anica notes that oral histories are generally exempt from IRB oversight)

Major medical problems as per Bina and Preetha and Meredith:
• Peptic ulcer disease (caused by H pylori bacteria – every person in poor communities – easily transmitted. Fecal-oral transmission).
• Parasites
• City fumes – respiratory

Grants:

Many of the grants are due in early March!!

UM students can apply for the International Institute grants (due. Feb 20). The application is fairly short.

Next meeting:

Decide focus of film

To do list:
Come up with topic
Contact faculty (Anica, Meredith, Yoni)
Figure out expenses (Kyle)
Template for funding apps.
Contact Quito people- is there a film collective? (Meredith)
Talk to Erica who grew up in Ecuador. She is a public health graduate and is part of Quito Project (we did this at the Quito Project Meeting – she mentioned the fumes in the city and grassroots protests that include hanging white sheets in morning that are brown by evening. Washed them and put the dirty water in bottles, shown on t.v.
Grant writing session
Look into flower topic- can we do with base in Quito? (Dana – can you look into the logistics of this?)

Anica - talk to prof about anthropologists working in Ecuador; look at II funding
Kyle - living and traveling expenses; grant research at library
Dana – logistics of doing the rose industry topic
Yoni - keep researching grants
Dealio - Sami grant update

Next meeting will be Saturday, February 11 from 6-9pm. Location to be announced.

2:27 PM
