Project Categories
Internships: Funding is available for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students to participate in internships abroad. Internships can be with private companies, government agencies, international organizations or nongovernmental organizations. The International Institute is not able to offer assistance in obtaining internship placements.
Research Projects: The fellowship also supports undergraduates and Master's degree students (including professional school students) who are doing research abroad as part of their degree program. For the purposes of this award, research is defined as thesis research, participation in an on-going research project as part of a required degree-related work experience, or other independent research toward degree requirements. The research project does not have to be for academic credit.
Preliminary Dissertation Research: Additionally, the award provides partial support for preliminary visits to prospective overseas dissertation sites by graduate students who are planning doctoral research on topics in area and international studies. These awards are intended to enable students to develop a firm foundation for their research. Doctoral students must not have reached candidacy by the time they begin the research award.
Eligibility Criteria
Internships and research projects must be at least one month in length, and must constitute at least a 30-hour per week time commitment, exclusive of language training.
Applicants must have the language skills to carry out the proposed internship or research project.
Applicants must have proof of a grant in the amount of $1,000 from their home unit or a central unit on campus. To demonstrate proof of a departmental grant, students must have an authorized departmental signature on the application form. Applications without the required signature will be ineligible.
Awardees are ineligible to hold the award if they graduate or are placed on academic probation before the start of their projects abroad.
Group or joint applications are not eligible. Students planning joint or group activities are encouraged to contact Amy Kehoe akehoe@umich.edu to discuss proposals and possible funding opportunities.
The International Institute follows the University Travel Policy (http://www.umich.edu/%7Eitoc/) and the policies of the Institutional Review Board in determining the eligibility of locations and projects.
Award Awards will be up to $2,000. All applicants must submit a budget and the application form must indicate all sources of funding, including pending requests, as well as other requests to the International Institute.
Application Procedures Submit five copies of the International Institute Fellowship application (http://www.umich.edu/~iinet/iisite/funding/2006%20II%20Fellowships%20Ap plication.pdf) , with the required departmental signature confirming cost-sharing, and the following required attachments (collated and paper-clipped; not stapled):
1. A proposal (two pages, single-spaced, maximum)
Applications for an internship funding, must include information on how this experience will benefit the applicant's academic program and his or her career plans upon completion of the U-M degree.
Applications for funds to support a research project must describe the project and discuss its rationale, objectives, design, and methodology, as well as the projected benefits of the trip. If the applicant will be working with an established research project, a description of the organization and the activities in which he or she will be engaged must be included.
2. Applicants for funds to support an internship, must submit a letter of invitation (email is fine) from the host organization describing the organization, the specific work, and the financial terms of the internship. Research applicants need not submit a letter of invitation, unless it is appropriate and the applicant thinks such a letter will make his or her application more competitive. Examples include a letter from a faculty member at a university abroad acknowledging and supporting the applicant's plans, or a letter from an archive granting access.
3. A budget, including estimated cost for travel, lodging, food, visa/s, immunizations, and research materials, as well as efforts to obtain cost-sharing from departments, schools, outside funding sources, or additional requests to the II
4. A resume/curriculum vitae
5. U-M transcript (unofficial is fine); if you are a transfer student and would like to submit a transcript from your previous institution, you may, but it is not required
6. One letter of reference from a faculty member in your department (preferably your advisor), which speaks to your ability to carry out your internship or proposed research project and the contribution it will make to your academic program and career (submitted in a sealed enveloped signed across the flap)
Deadline The application deadline is 5:00 p.m., Monday, February 20, 2006. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be reviewed. No exceptions will be made.
Review Process A selection committee comprised of faculty and staff from across the University will evaluate the applications on the following criteria: feasibility, relevance to degree program, relevance to career goals, record of academic achievement, and overall quality of the application.
The International Institute does not provide feedback to applicants on the quality of their proposals, nor provide applicants with evaluators' comments.
The process is very competitive, as the International Institute receives more requests for funding from high-quality applicants than there is funding available. Do not assume that you will receive an award. Do not purchase an airline before the awards are announced if you cannot cover the cost yourself. Also note that, given limited resources, each year there are departments that go under- or un-represented in the cohort of finalists.
Applicants will be notified of the results no later than April 1, 2006. If possible, the International Institute will announce the grantees earlier so that students may purchase airline tickets and secure additional funding.
Reporting Requirements Grantees must provide a brief report to the International Institute by September 1, 2006. The report should be two to five pages in length and outline the internship experience as well as summarize all funds received from all other sources.
Grantees are encouraged to write an article and submit photographs to be considered for publication in the Journal of the International Institute (http://www.umich.edu/%7Eiinet/journal/).
