II Experiential Learning Fund

Amy Kehoe from the International Institute recommended that we "contact [our] faculty leader and ask him/her to apply to the International Institute Experiential Learning Fund on behalf of the project and the participating students."

Here is a link to the program description and an application form.

More info inside. I don't know if this would work for us, since we do not yet have an advisor...

II Experiential Learning Fund

Program Description The fund is designed to support faculty-led group travel for graduate and professional school students wishing to incorporate travel abroad as part of an ongoing course, group internship or other educational program [during either winter break or spring/summer terms.] Successful proposals will include a faculty member who is actively involved in site selection, planning, and evaluation of the overseas experience. In general, the expectation is that faculty will lead the trip. In some cases (e.g. group internships), faculty may appoint a colleague in-country to manage the trip. The International Institute has a preference for trips that include students and/or faculty from multiple units, as well as initiatives that have potential for long-term engagement with the host country institutions.
The Experiential Learning Fund (ELF) is designed to encourage faculty to include group travel in their courses, internships or other educational programs. The fund can be used to support such faculty-led travel during winter break or spring/summer terms.

Eligibility Criteria Proposals submitted by faculty from all graduate or professional schools will be considered. Trips may be part of a non-credit experience, but should be part of a well-defined course or curricular program. The program is highly competitive; the II expects to funds no more than two to three new initiatives annually. Grants are not awarded for humanitarian trips, projects with the primary purpose of service learning, projects solely involving pre-dissertation or dissertation research, or conference travel.

Award Grant s generally range from $4,000 to $10,000 to cover graduate or professional school student costs only. It is expected that faculty costs will be covered by the home department. This program does not fund undergraduates.
Application Procedures Submit three copies of the application form and the required attachments to Amy Kehoe, International Institute, Suite 2660 SSWB.
Deadline November 15th for winter break or summer trips; March 15th for summer trips (if funds are available).

Reporting Requirements Grant recipients are required to submit a report to the International Institute by the start of the term following the trip.

Contact Applicants are encouraged to discuss their projects with staff in advance. Direct questions and submit applications to: Amy Kehoe, International Institute, SSWB, 1080 S. University, Suite 2660 , Ann Arbor , MI 48109-1106 ; akehoe@umich.edu
