UM Institute for the Humanities - Mini Grant

Mini Grant Guidelines

All Michigan faculty and graduate students are eligible to apply for mini grants. Applications may be made at any time and must include a proposal, a budget, and a list of other funding sources, actual and/or solicited. A condition of funding is that the event have a component open to the university public (no grants will be awarded to entirely closed workshops, courses, etc…). Awardees must acknowledge the Institute’s support in their publicity and submit a report to the Institute at the end of the project. Funds will be disbursed upon receipt of the report; if this presents a hardship, exceptions to this policy may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Direct applications to Daniel Herwitz, Director, Institute for the Humanities, 0540 Rackham Building, 915 E Washington, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1070, or by email to herwitz@umich.edu.

Other Americas / Otros Saberes Call for Proposals

A Collaborative Research Initiative of the Latin American Studies Association

The Latin American political landscape has changed profoundly in the past two decades, as indigenous and Afro-Latin peoples have made their voices heard in national arenas. Throughout the region, thousands of civil society organizations and social movements participate in these struggles, working on a wide range of issues, from land rights to bilingual education, from gender equality to the building of transnational networks. Intellectuals associated with these organizations are knowledge producers: they have defined high priority immediate and long-term problems that require attention, and they are constantly generating knowledge about these problems, though in forms that often remain internal, used but rarely disseminated in academic venues. The Otros Saberes Initiative will connect these civil society knowledge producers with university-based researchers who have similar areas of expertise, allowing both groups to reap the benefits of collaboration.

Early Signs: Melting Ice Caps in Ecuador

Not exactly health related, but interesting:

"Scientists say that 80 percent of Andean ice caps are likely to melt away in the next 15 years due to climate change. The glacier's demise means less water and a changing way of life for the 30,000 mostly indigenous people who live in the foothills of Cotacachi Mountain. Their story is this week's installment of an ongoing series, 'Early Signs: Reports from a Warming Planet.'"
